New toilet building opened
4 July 2025After months of construction, the new toilet building has finally been opened. The toilet building now has 3 showers, 3 toilets, 2 urinals, a changing room and a place to wash your hands, brush your teeth, shave, etc. Outside, next to the entrance to the toilet building, there is now also a place to wash dishes.
This toilet building is connected to the new space where coffee and apple pie can be enjoyed during the mill’s opening hours. There is also enough space here to enjoy this even in bad weather. From the new terrace there is a wide view over the fields and the mill can be admired in all its beauty. This reception area and the terrace will not be opened until a few weeks from now, when the floor has also been laid.
The building meets the latest sustainability requirements. The water and heating are heated with solar energy as much as possible.

First pile for new construction driven
4 July 2025Yesterday afternoon, January 30, 2025, the first pile was finally driven for the new construction at the mill ‘De Hoop’. With this new construction, we hope to be able to offer our mill guests an even more pleasant stay. In addition to a larger reception area, where you can also enjoy a cup of coffee indoors when the weather is less pleasant, a new toilet building is also being built for our camper guests. If everything goes according to plan, construction will be completed by the end of April. After this, the furnishing can begin and we hope to be able to open everything at the beginning of June.
During construction, it is still possible to stay on the site with campers. The south side of the site is completely free of construction work. Although it is of course true that there may be some noise pollution. We also hope that the remaining places will soon be supplied with electricity. Then 24 campers can enjoy this unique environment.
We are still looking for additional sponsors for this project. If you care about the mill, please contact the mill’s board (info@molentzand.nl).

Piece of history reunited with mill
4 July 2025When the mill was still in Leiden, this mill was, among other things, a sawmill. At that time the name of the mill was “De Haan”. Because of the connection with the sawmill, a beard (name plate of the mill) was made in Rococo style with a rooster carved in wood. When the mill was moved to ‘t Zand in 1865, the beard was left behind at the sawmill. When the sawmill was demolished, the Timmerman family (the owners of the sawmill at the time) were able to save the beard from demolition.
For a long time it was uncertain what the origin of mill “De Hoop” was. However, for a number of years it has been established with certainty that this was once mill “De Haan” from Leiden. The Timmerman family, who still had that beard in their possession, also found out and contacted Jaap Zeeman. Ultimately, this led to the beard being reunited with the mill. The official transfer took place on October 27, 2021.
